How GST Works for Talent in Australia
Last updated: July 23, 2026
If your tax residence is Australia, goods and services tax (GST) may apply to the services Lifted provides to you. This article explains when GST applies, the current rate, and how to manage your GST information.
When GST applies
GST applies if your tax residence is set to Australia and you have not provided a valid Australian Business Number (ABN) and confirmed that you’re registered for GST.
GST may apply whether you live, have a permanent address, or are temporarily residing in Australia.
If you move to another country, update your tax information in your account. We’ll automatically adjust the taxes we collect based on your updated residence.
If you update your tax residence, legal name, or other tax details, you may need to revalidate your ABN.
Which services GST applies to
GST applies to the fees Lifted currently charges for services:
Service fees
We assess GST on Lifted service fees, not on the amounts you charge your clients.
If we add new paid features in the future and local tax laws require GST on those services, the applicable tax will appear on your invoice.
GST rate in Australia
The standard GST rate in Australia is 10%.
You can see the estimated GST amount on your invoices and in your transaction history.
Providing your ABN and GST registration status
You’re not required to provide an ABN to use Lifted.
However, if you enter a valid ABN in your tax information and confirm that you’re registered for GST, we won’t collect GST on applicable services. Your ABN will appear on your invoices.
If GST was already collected before you added a valid ABN and confirmation, we’re unable to refund it. Once collected, GST is remitted directly to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). You may be able to claim a credit through your tax return.
How to add or update your ABN
You can add or update your ABN at any time:
Go to Settings and select Tax information.
Scroll to the Value-added tax section and click Edit.
Enter your GST details.
Select Save.
We’ll validate your ABN after submission. You can check its status from the Tax information page.
ABN format
An ABN:
Contains 11 numeric digits
Example: 12123456789
If you receive an error when entering your ABN, confirm you entered all 11 digits.
If the number is correct but can’t be validated as GST-registered, contact the ATO, the Australian Business Register, or a qualified tax advisor.
If you don’t have an ABN or you’re not registered for GST
You can still use Lifted. If you do not provide an ABN and confirm GST registration, GST will be collected on Lifted service fees where required.
If you’re unsure whether you should register for GST, contact the ATO or a qualified tax advisor.
Refunds for GST paid before adding a valid ABN
If GST was collected before you added a valid ABN and confirmation, we can’t refund these taxes. GST collected is remitted directly to the Australian government. You may be able to claim a credit through your tax return.
GST and the $75,000 registration threshold
Even if you’re under the $75,000 GST registration threshold, Lifted is still required to collect GST on the services we provide.
If you are GST-registered and provide a valid ABN with confirmation, we won’t collect GST on applicable services.
