How GST Works for Talent in India
If your tax residence is India, goods and services tax (GST) may apply to the service fees Lifted charges you. This article explains when GST applies, the current rate, and how to manage your GST information.
When GST applies
GST applies if your tax residence is set to India and you have not provided a valid Goods and Services Tax Identification Number (GSTIN).
GST may apply whether you live, have a permanent address, or are temporarily residing in India.
If you move to another country, update your tax information in your account. We’ll automatically adjust the taxes we collect based on your updated residence.
If you update your tax residence, legal name, or other tax details, you may need to revalidate your GSTIN.
Which services GST applies to
GST applies to the fees Lifted currently charges for services:
Service fees
If we add new paid features in the future and local tax laws require GST on those services, the applicable tax will appear on your invoice.
GST rate in India
The standard GST rate in India for platform service fees is 18%.
You can see the estimated GST amount at checkout (for purchases), on your invoices, and in your transaction history.
Providing your GSTIN
You’re not required to provide a GSTIN to use Lifted.
However, if you enter a valid GSTIN in your tax information, we won’t collect GST on applicable services. Your GSTIN will appear on your invoices.
If GST was already collected before you added a valid GSTIN, we’re unable to refund it. Once collected, GST is remitted directly to the Indian government. You may be able to claim input tax credit through your GST return.
How to add or update your GSTIN
You can add or update your GSTIN at any time:
Go to Settings and select Tax information.
Scroll to the Value-added tax section and click Edit.
Enter your VAT details.
Select Save.
We’ll validate your GSTIN after submission. You can check its status from the Tax information page.
GSTIN format in India
A GSTIN is issued when you register for GST with the Indian government. It is not the same as your PAN.
A GSTIN contains 15 alphanumeric characters.
Example: 27ABCDE1234F1Z5
For registration guidance, contact the Indian GST authority, or a qualified tax advisor.
Exemptions from GST in India
India does not offer exemptions from GST on services that Lifted provides. You can avoid GST charges by providing a valid GSTIN in your tax information.
