How to Submit a Milestone
Last updated: July 7, 2026
Overview
Milestone contracts are used for projects that are completed in stages. A milestone represents a stage of the project with its own deliverables or distinct set of tasks, review process, and payment.
As you complete each milestone, you will submit the work for client review. Once approved, payment is processed for that milestone.
Submitting a milestone
Once you've completed the work for a milestone, you can submit it for client review.
To submit a milestone:
Select Contracts from the left navigation menu.
Open the contract that contains the milestone you want to submit.
In the Milestones section, locate the milestone you’re ready to submit and click Submit.
In the panel that opens you can:
Add a note about the completed work (optional).
Attach supporting files or documentation (optional).
Click Submit milestone.
Once submitted, the milestone enters the client review period.
Milestones must be submitted in order. For example, you can't submit Milestone 3 until Milestones 1 and 2 have been approved.
After you submit a milestone
After you submit a milestone, your client has 14 days to review the deliverables or completed work.
During the review period, the client can:
Approve the milestone
Decline the milestone and request revisions
If no action is taken within 14 days, the milestone is automatically approved.
If your milestone is approved
Once a milestone is approved, payment enters a 5-day security period before funds become available.
For information about payment timelines, security review periods, and when funds become available, see How Payments Work for Milestone Contracts.
If your milestone is declined or revisions are requested
If your client requests revisions or declines the submission, the milestone is returned to you for updates.
You can review the feedback, update your deliverables, and resubmit the milestone when you're ready.
There is no deadline to resubmit a returned milestone.
Once you resubmit the milestone, the client can approve the updated submission or request additional revisions.
FAQ
Can I edit a milestone after submitting it?
No. Once a milestone has been submitted, you can't make changes while it's under client review. If updates are needed, the client can return the milestone for revisions. After it's returned, you can update the milestone and submit it again.
What happens after I submit a milestone?
You'll receive email notifications throughout the milestone review process, including when you submit a milestone, if it's returned for updates, and when your client approves it and payment begins processing.
What happens if my client doesn't respond?
Clients have 14 days to review a submitted milestone. If no action is taken during that period, the milestone is automatically approved.
